What To Do If You Have an Eye Emergency

close-up of eye

First things first. Don’t panic! Staying calm is the best way to help you think straight and help those around you to remain calm. Often, it’s not necessary to go to an emergency room for eye emergencies. In fact, the vast majority of people who go to the emergency room for eye care could have received treatment from their local optometrist instead.

If you’re unsure whether you’re experiencing an eye emergency, give us a call immediately! Delay may increase the risk of serious complications and may result in vision loss.

Until you see your eye doctor or seek urgent care, avoid the following:

  • Don’t try to remove an embedded object out of your eye
  • If your eye is injured, don't press on it or rub it
  • Dry cotton and sharp instruments such as tweezers should never be used on the eye.

Whether you've had a workplace accident or an at-home incident, our eye doctors are here to help

Eye Emergencies FAQs

What is considered an eye emergency?

Eye emergencies are anything that may cause permanent damage to your eyes or vision without timely intervention from an eye care professional.

The most common types of eye emergencies include:

  • A blow, poke or other trauma to the eye
  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Chemical spills in the eye
  • Foreign object embedded in the eye
  • Sudden appearance of light flashes or floaters
  • Contact lens lost in the eye
Does an eye infection require urgent care?

Symptoms of an eye infection typically include itching, burning, redness, crusty and watery eyes. See a Fredericksburg eye doctor if your symptoms last over 4 days or if you experience intense pain, redness, blurred vision or light sensitivity.

What should I do if a foreign object enters my eye?

Most of the time, a person can easily remove debris from the eye by repeatedly blinking to get the debris out. If that doesn't work, you can wash your eye with saline (sterile salt water) to flush out any dust and dirt from your eye, or use streaming tap water.

However, to scratch your cornea while attempting to get an object out which can cause further site-threatening complications.

So the best thing you can do in this kind of eye emergency is to get to your eye doctor in Fredericksburg as soon as possible.

As a nurse I really appreciated the professionalism of the staff, the incredible knowledge base of D... r Juett, and the cleanliness of the facility. Dr Juett took the time to listen to my requests and develop a plan of care to suit my vision needs. He was extremely knowledgeable and up to date on current trends. Gabby, his assistant, was also wonderful and caring. Elsa was able to help me choose the frames I needed and was so knowledgeable herself… She was able to answer all of my questions…I felt I was in the best hands ever. I wholly recommend Dr Juett and his staff!!!

Big shout-out for Dr Juett and the staff at Hill Country Vision Center. What a warm and friendly gr... oup of people. The facilities and service were excellent. Loved that I didn't need my eyes dilated - just a quick scan of each eye instead and I got to see my own Peepers which was quite interesting. Also got a extra 'helping hand' Texas style - Thank you Elsa! And in my best Texan accent...... Y'all are the best!

Everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. They made my first time getting an eye exam and glasse... s very easy. They have so many styles of glasses to choose from that everyone can find what they are looking for. And help me pick out a pair that fits perfectly when I received them. Also I received my new glasses in about a week. Highly recommend them for your eye care needs.

We were on a cross country road trip when my wife’s primary glasses broke. I started to make calls... to practices along our route that carried the make of frames she had. We found HCVC and made contact with Christina who had us e-mail a photo of her frame. Christina replied that this was no problem and the office had many more frames for my wife to choose from. Arriving at the office I fully expected we would have a wait but Christina took care of us right away and we were on our way in 45 minutes! The office even took our insurance. Thanks Again to HCVC and Christina for your exceptional service!

The most welcoming and professional medical office I have experienced . They operate on time, treat... patients as humans and not simply a medical case, thorough examination, patient to explain and answer questions, respectful of economics and cost of medical care. Wonderful jewel in the medical community!
